I’m not quite sure how I felt about that, but I was just very aware of their central role in it and the way they were portrayed (I read it as they were shown to be good people but ones who made mistakes). THE CHEERLEADERS was a strange book to be reading right now, as the story is inextricably bound up with cops. A few of them felt a little sensationalised I hope I’ve listed all the content warnings (these are the ones I noted, but if I missed any, please say!) because there is a lot to be aware of before going in. While I was expecting it to be pretty hard hitting (a sister delving into the death of five girls within a few months), I was not expecting it to be quite that full of tricky subjects. This is quite a ride of a book, and not the lightest of reads. While I am all for more thrillers, I’d love to see more diverse ones as they all seem to be about white middle/upper class American girls. It’s certainly a case of publishers trying to ride the ONE OF US IS LYING high in the market right now. It’s a US title from a few years back that is being published here (UK) this year. I requested this book as I love YA thrillers. There are no more cheerleaders in Sunnybrook, but that doesn’t mean anyone else is safe. And somehow Monica is at the center of it all.
